Lecturer (Below the Bar) in Physiology


Applications are invited for a Lectureship Below the Bar in Physiology. The appointment will be for 10 years, in the first instance. The successful candidate will have research experience in vascular physiology, although well qualified candidates with expertise in other areas of physiology will be considered.


NUI Galway is a dynamic, growing university that is rapidly increasing its research capability through investment in the development of innovative, collaborative research programmes involving departments and centres within and outside the University. A new Human Biology building to house the Discipline of Physiology, along with the Disciplines of Anatomy and Pharmacology & Therapeutics is currently under development. Education at NUI Galway is also undergoing significant reform with a new emphasis on interdisciplinary integrated courses. The Discipline of Physiology plays a key role in supporting the development of research and teaching at NUI Galway within the Colleges of Medicine, Nursing & Health Sciences, Science, and Engineering and Informatics. It offers two postgraduate course in Sports and Exercise.


The Physiology Discipline is undergoing an expansion in its academic staff following the appointment of a new Chair of Physiology. As part of this expansion, a lectureship has been created for a dynamic, enthusiastic individual with research expertise in some aspect of vascular biology, in which she/he should already have a profile. The successful candidate will be expected to establish her/his own research group, to attract external research funding and to supervise postgraduate students. The successful applicant will lecture students in a number of modules, in particular cardiovascular and muscle physiology, although other areas will be considered. In addition to lecturing responsibilities, the lecturer will contribute to administration, carry out research in vascular physiology, deliver and coordinate modules, prepare teaching materials and support, and supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students.


The successful applicant will have:
o A minimum of Ph.D. qualification.
o A track record of research in vascular physiology, with demonstrated
peer review publications in the area
o Success with attracting external funding would be an advantage
o Previous experience of working with and educating undergraduate
students in physiology would also be adventageous
o Previous experience with postgraduate student supervision
o Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
